Composting is a sustainable and eco-friendly way to manage organic waste. Composting with worms, also known as vermicomposting, enables a special species of earthworm, a red wiggler (Eisenia fetida), to eat our garbage and turn it into a soil amendment that is rich in beneficial bacteria, fungi, minerals, and nutrients.

Gardeners!

Worm castings can be expensive to buy by the bag. It’s easy to make your own. Maintaining a small-scale worm “farm” takes little time for big payoff. You recycle your scraps, the worms eat, and you have a sustainable soil amendment at your fingertips. You can go on vacation for weeks and not worry about your worm bin!

Add castings to potting soil for additional micronutrients and improved water retention. Sprinkle castings on the surface around plants. Mix castings with water to make “worm tea” and drench the soil around plants.

“Vermicompost” can be used to improve soil fertility and promote plant growth. By recycling our waste back into the soil, we protect the environment from dangerous gases and water pollution caused by garbage decomposing in landfills.

After trying fancy worm farm systems we always go back to the storage tub. So simple and we get more pounds of worm castings than tricky flow-through systems with trays. No need to spend money on fancy worm systems.

Teachers and Educators:

Learn how to make a model of a red wiggler, easily grasp how to set up a worm bin for success. Hold a composting “fair” and customize it for your specific situation.

Worm bins serve many purposes in a learning environment. Benefits extend beyond recycling and composting. Red wigglers and their cocoons can captivate people, calm anxious moods, and support ecology and science lessons.
